STUDIO POLICY
WHAT ALL STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW:
1) ARRIVAL TIME:
Be prompt. If you arrive early, please wait quietly on the chair in the foyer or in the waiting room until your lesson/lab time. If the “Lesson in Progress” sign is up, do not ring the doorbell; you are welcome to just come in.
2) MATERIALS:
Bring all your books, practice tapes and other materials to the lesson. Have all your books in order, and opened to the currently assigned pages.
3) CLEAN HANDS/SHORT FINGERNAILS:
Please go to the bathroom and wash your hands (if not freshly washed) as soon as you enter. Your nails should be clipped short both for lessons and for daily practicing.
4) COME TO LESSON PREPARED:
You are expected to have completed and recorded your weekly assignments prior to entering the studio. Keep your assignment binder with your books, and have it open for each day's home practice session(s). Each day, place a check by those pieces practiced and record the actual time you spent practicing that day. If you are not an adult student, have a parent sign your book at the end of the week to verify the practice times recorded. You are encouraged to practice at least four days a week for the following amounts of time:
Young Beginners: ~10 minutes per day
Primer: ~15 minutes per day
Level 1, Accelerated 1, Adult 1: ~20 minutes per day
Level 2, Accelerated 2, Adult 2: ~25 minutes per day
Level 3: ~30 minutes per day
Level 4: ~45 minutes per day
Level 5 and up: ~45-60 minutes per day
As your skills advance to the intermediate/early advanced levels, you will need to practice a minimum of 1 hour a day to cover the longer, more demanding repertoire and technical work.
5) ATTENDANCE:
Students are expected to attend all lessons unless too sick to go to school/work or in case of family emergency.
6) BEHAVIOR:
Students are expected to enter the studio quietly and not disturb the teacher when she is working with another student. Students should not be disruptive, nor should they be disinterested in lessons.
7) RECITALS and other PERFORMANCES:
All students are strongly encouraged to perform at the Summer and Christmas Serenades/Recitals. Additional studio performance opportunities may come along during the year, for which the student should obtain the teacher's consent before planning to perform.

WHAT ADULTS & PARENTS NEED TO KNOW:
MAINTAIN A PIANO IN THE BEST POSSIBLE CONDITION, tuned yearly, with the chair or bench at correct height. The piano should be in a location that allows for uninterrupted practice with adequate lighting.
CHECK YOUR (YOUR CHILD'S) ASSIGNMENT BINDER AFTER EACH LESSON. Your student calendar, and your monthly statement will be inserted in the front of the binder.
PARENTAL SUPPORT IS IMPORTANT! See that each student practices the recommended amount of time each week. When needed, help your child read the practice directions I write on their assignment sheets.
1) PARENTS SHOULD MONITOR PRACTICE:
Before each lesson, sign your child's practice record to indicate that what is recorded is what your child did that week. If you have a very young child, you may need to record practice times yourself and help the child find the pages assigned.Student’s nails should be kept short for both lesson and practice
2) FINANCES:
You are expected to bring or send tuition and all fees for books and other items one month in advance with the first lesson of the month, but no later than the 15th. Your monthly statement will indicate the amount to bring or send with the first lesson, and will include any books and materials not yet paid for. A LATE FEE of $5.00 will be charged when payment is received after the 15th of the month. Students will need new books every six to nine months, depending on advancement levels. Flashcards, and a metronome are other items you can expect students will need as lessons progress.
3) TRANSPORTATION:
Parents are responsible for transporting children to and from lessons. A child who arrives early because he/she rides the bus should wait quietly on the chair in the foyer or in the waiting room until time for lesson to begin. If the “Lesson in Progress” sign is up, there is no need to ring the doorbell before coming in and being seated. Should you be dropping your student off and arrive early, please have the student wait in the car until time for lesson to begin. Please be sure the child is inside the studio before driving away. Children must be picked up as soon as the lesson ends, as I may have other appointments and don’t want them waiting for a parent alone.
4) VISITORS AT LESSONS:
Visitors are welcome to sit in on lessons, but please bring other children along only if they can sit or play quietly and not be disruptive to the lesson. Parents of very young students are encouraged to attend all lessons until I indicate it is not necessary.
5) NUMBER OF LESSONS:
Tuition remains the same each month during the school term, regardless of the number of lessons that month. Your student calendar will indicate lesson days, holidays, holiday make-up days, group lesson weeks, rehearsals and performance dates for the upcoming month. The designated holidays usually coincide with the Alamogordo school calendar. The month of July is summer break. There are no lessons during summer break, and no tuition is due for July.
6) MAKEUP LESSONS:
In the case of illness or emergency, and with at least 24 hours notice, a makeup lesson may be offered at the discretion of the teacher. If a student does not show up for a lesson, it will not be made up, and an explanation as to the student’s absence will be expected as soon as possible. Should I need to cancel a lesson, I will notify you as soon as possible, and a makeup lesson will be offered at a time convenient for teacher and student.

7) TUITION CREDIT:
No tuition credit is given for missed lessons due to illness, emergency, holiday, vacation, school closure, or absence for any other reason.
8) TERMINATING LESSONS:
The teacher may terminate lessons due to a student’s disruptive attitude or disinterest in lessons, due to a student's not preparing adequately for lessons, due to a student's persistent absences, or for failure to pay tuition on time. Parents/students may terminate lessons at any time following a conference with the teacher and notice of one month. If notice of one month is not given the teacher, then tuition will be due for that month.
