STUDIO POLICY
WHAT ALL STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW:
ARRIVAL TIME - Be prompt. If you arrive early, please wait quietly in the waiting room until your lesson/lab time. If the “Lesson in Progress” sign is up, do not ring the doorbell; you are welcome to just come in. If your lesson is from 4:00-5:00, and you come at 4:10, the session will still end at 5:00.
MATERIALS - Bring all your books and other materials to the lesson. Have all your books in order, and opened to the currently assigned pages.
CLEAN HANDS/SHORT FINGERNAILS - Please go to the bathroom and wash your hands (if not freshly washed) as soon as you enter. Your nails should be clipped short both for lessons and for daily practicing.
COME TO LESSON PREPARED - You are expected to have completed and recorded your weekly assignments prior to entering the studio. Keep your assignment binder with your books, and have it open for each day's home practice session(s). Each day, place a check by those pieces practiced and record the actual time you spent practicing that day. If you are not an adult student, have a parent sign your book at the end of the week to verify the practice times recorded. You are encouraged to practice at least 5 days a week for the following amounts of time:
Young Beginners: ~5 minutes per day
Primer: ~10 minutes per day
Level 1, Accelerated 1, Adult 1: ~15 minutes per day
Level 2, Accelerated 2, Adult 2: ~20 minutes per day
Level 3: ~25 minutes per day
Level 4: ~30 minutes per day
Level 5 and up: ~45-60 minutes per day
As your skills advance to the intermediate/early advanced levels, you will need to practice a minimum of 1 hour a day to cover the longer, more demanding repertoire and technical work.

Success with an instrument isn't based on "natural ability", it really boils down to putting in the time:
5 Days = Steady Progress
4 Days = Mostly Treading Water
3 Days and under = Grab the Life Preserver!
ATTENDANCE - Students are expected to attend all lessons unless too sick to go to school/work or in case of family emergency.
BEHAVIOR - Students are expected to enter the studio quietly and not disturb the teacher when she is working with another student. Students should not be disruptive, nor should they be disinterested in lessons.
RECITALS and other PERFORMANCES - All students are strongly encouraged to perform at all studio recitals/serenades. There is a rehearsal for each recital/serenade. In addition, student study songs, student compositions, lead sheet improvisations, and memorized pieces are performed at group lessons. Additional studio performance opportunities may come along during the year, for which the student should obtain the teacher's consent before planning to perform.

WHAT ADULTS & PARENTS NEED TO KNOW:
MAINTAIN A PIANO IN THE BEST POSSIBLE CONDITION - Your piano should be tuned yearly, with the chair or bench at correct height. The piano should be in a location that allows for uninterrupted practice with adequate lighting.
CHECK YOUR (YOUR CHILD'S) ASSIGNMENT BINDER AFTER EACH LESSON - Your studio calendar, tuition and fees record, and any current handouts will be inserted in the front of the binder.
PARENTS SHOULD MONITOR PRACTICE - See that each student practices the recommended amount of time each week. When needed, help your child read the practice directions I write on their assignment sheets. Before each lesson, sign your child's practice record to indicate that what is recorded is what your child did that week. If you have a very young child, you may need to record practice times yourself and help the child find the pages assigned. Student's nails should be kept short for both lesson and practice.
FINANCES - You are expected to pay tuition installments and all other amounts owing prior to the first scheduled lesson of the month. Your tuition and fees record will indicate the amount to pay. An Early Bird discount of $5.00 per student is offered for payments received by the 1st day of the month. A LATE FEE of $5.00 PER STUDENT will be charged when payment is received after the first scheduled lesson of the month. Students will need new books every six to nine months, depending on advancement levels. A metronome should be purchased within the first three months of piano study.
TRANSPORTATION - Parents are responsible for transporting children to and from lessons. A child who arrives early because he/she rides the bus should wait quietly in the waiting room until time for lesson to begin. If the “Lesson in Progress” sign is up, there is no need to ring the doorbell before coming in and being seated. Should you be dropping your student off and arrive early, please have the student wait in the car until time for lesson to begin. Please be sure the child is inside the studio before driving away. Children must be picked up as soon as the lesson ends, as I may have other appointments and don’t want them waiting for a parent alone.
VISITORS AT LESSONS - Visitors are welcome to quietly sit in on lessons, but please bring other children along only if they can sit or play quietly and not be disruptive to the lesson. Parents of very young students are encouraged to attend all lessons until I indicate it is not necessary.
NUMBER OF LESSONS - Upon enrollment each student is reserved weekly private or group lessons, plus rehearsals, and performances. Tuition is calculated on an annual basis, and installments remain the same each month during the school term, regardless of the number of lessons that month. The month of July is summer break and no tuition is due. Your studio calendar indicates group lesson weeks, breaks for Thanksgiving-Christmas-Spring, and any rehearsal and performance dates for the current school year.
MAKEUP LESSONS - Please call with as much advance notice as possible for any absence. In the case of illness or emergency, a makeup lesson may be offered at the discretion of the teacher. If a student misses a lesson for any other reason, it will not be made up. If you miss a lesson due to your vacation, you will still be charged. This is your choice - please consider it part of your vacation expenses. Should I need to cancel a lesson, I will notify you as soon as possible, and a makeup lesson will be offered.

TUITION CREDIT - No tuition credit is given for missed lessons due to any reason.
TERMINATING LESSONS - The teacher may terminate lessons due to a student’s disruptive attitude or disinterest in lessons, due to a student's not preparing adequately for lessons, due to a student's persistent absences, or for failure to pay tuition on time. Parents/students may terminate lessons at any time following a conference with the teacher and notice of one month. If notice of one month is not given the teacher, then tuition will be due for that month.
